Cybersecurity – Another important role for financial aid professionals

As a financial aid professional, your job has unique functions and responsibilities – differing from other employees on campus.
But there is one responsibility that is the same for every employee of a postsecondary institution. It is data security, and it is critical to the livelihood of your organization.
Financial aid offices handle a lot of personal information for students and their families, and with the collection of personal documents for verification, the security of personal data has to be a priority.
Fortunately, there are some online resources to help your office manage compliance with data security regulations. FSA has added a new web page consolidating its cybersecurity information and resources at ifap.ed.gov/eannouncements/Cyber.html. The Protecting Student Privacy website at studentprivacy.ed.gov/ is also another resource with information for financial aid professionals and others dealing with student data.
